Reading
“The more that you read, the more that you’ll know. The more things you know,
the more places you’ll go.” Dr Seuss
Our Approach to Reading
At Broad Chalke CE Primary School, we are passionate about nurturing a love of reading from the very beginning. Through our structured phonics programme, Unlocking Letters and Sounds, children develop strong early reading skills. As they move through the school, pupils engage with a diverse range of high-quality texts and authors, fostering curiosity, comprehension and confidence. Our whole-class reading approach ensures that every child is supported and challenged to become a fluent, thoughtful reader who reads widely and often—for both purpose and pleasure.
As part of this, we prioritise regular ERIC (Everyone Reading in Class) Time, Story Time, Whole-Class Reading Lessons, Group Guided Reading Lessons and Reading for Pleasure time.
As well as engaging pupils through the text-choice we offer in school, we have also created ‘Recommended Reading Lists: Our Top 25’ for each year group which parents and carers can use to enrich pupils’ reading diets at home (please click on the links below).
We also regularly invite parents and carers into school for our 'stay and read' events.
