Our Approach to Writing

At Broad Chalke CE Primary School, we place high value on writing as a key tool for communication, creativity and self-expression. Our approach begins with high-quality texts that inspire children to think deeply, explore language and develop their own ideas. By immersing pupils in the ‘world of the book,’ we encourage them to become thoughtful writers who use rich vocabulary and varied sentence structures.

Writing is taught through a structured ‘Learning Journey’ model, where children move through stages of planning, drafting, editing and publishing. Each journey is tailored to meet curriculum objectives and includes direct teaching of grammar, punctuation and spelling in meaningful contexts. This process not only builds technical accuracy but also encourages independence, resilience and pride in their work.

We believe that every child is a writer, and we aim to nurture their confidence from the very beginning. Through engaging stimuli, purposeful tasks and consistent support, children develop their ability to write for different audiences and purposes. By celebrating creativity and refining core skills, we equip our pupils with the tools they need to communicate effectively and enjoy writing throughout their education.
